So what's this thing called a keylogger ?
Read below to find out what a keylogger is, how to get rid of one and how to prevent getting one.


What is a keylogger ?
A keylogger is small program that you don't intend to install but in some peoples cases it accidentally creeps its way into your computer and hides itself.
A keylogger records all your keystrokes and emails them to the person that sent you the keylogger in the first place.
This means that everything you type into your computer (e.g. - usernames, passwords, credit card details, phone numbers etc) can be found out and used against you.

How do I prevent myself from getting a keylogger ?
The best way to prevent yourself from getting a keylogger is to be careful what you download and install.
Most keyloggers are disguised as other programs and other files (e.g.- free credits program, free furni generator, dice rigger, etc) and their purpose is to steal your personal information and use it to get what they want.
Keyloggers are most of the time gained by people accepting files from so called friends, downloading programs and via email attachments.
Be careful what you download and use the internet safety guide to protect yourself and always scan a file before opening it and installing it.
Be sure to update your virus definitions every week !!!
Also make sure you have a firewall up and running on your computer. (see the firewall guide for more information)

How do I get rid of a keylogger ?
If you have a keylogger on your computer and you are sure then please do the following:

- if you are already logged into Habbo then stay logged in and do not re-login or enter any passwords anywhere !

Step one
First things first is to get a free online virus scan which can be obtained by going to http://www.mcafee.com.
Once here download the free online virus scan and be sure to make an account first or you cant login using Microsoft net passport.
After it has downloaded, scan your computer but please note: this may take time so be patient as it is worth getting rid of.
After your scan completes itself you should be presented with a list of filenames and at this point you need to note down the names of these files or print them off.
Do not manually delete these files as this will not get rid of the keylogger on your computer, instead just note them down as previously said.

Step two
At this point you have to download another program that will help you delete the entries in your registry.
Go to http://www.download.com and search "anti-spy" and within downloads, download the trial version of anti-spy.info 1 !
Once it has downloaded, run the scan and it should display all the programs running on your computer and it should also display its danger rating.
Look down the list then look for the filenames that you previously found in your mcafee scan and quarantine them.
Any registry entries will be deleted.

Step 3
Go to http://www.webroot.comand download the trial version of spysweeper and do a complete hard drive scan.
This will detect the keylogger on your computer which is now inactive, quarantines and is ready to be deleted so delete it along with all the corresponding registry entries.

Step 4
Be sure you are protected in the future by making sure you have a strong firewall up and running.
